Nikon has hit a grand slam with Digital SLR camera. It's as close to perfection as any digital camera has ever come. Sure, there are "better" cameras for more money, but they are all twice the size/weight. I would get this Nikon Digital SLR camera even if I had an unlimited amount of money to spend.

There is simply nothing like it. Lots of ingenius user interface elements, superb feel/handling, superb flash, outstanding image quality, instant response, superb viewfinder, superb LCD... I could go on. I have nothing bad to say about it, and I'm extremely picky. I thought I was going to wait for a full-frame sensor body, but when this came along, I could not wait to upgrade.

In addition to the superb 18-55mm nikon lens, I bought the 55-200mm VR II and 50mm F/1.8D lenses, the SB-400 external flash and a remote (3rd party off Ebay). I suspect many, many people will buy this exact set of equipment, since it's really all you'll ever need.

No need for an extra battery, unless you ever go many photo-filled days without being able to recharge. Get at least two 1GB 50x (or faster) SD cards, so if one stops working (it does happen), you aren't stuck.

The 55-200mm VR Nikon Nikkor lens is a necessity for shooting any action/wildlife. The optical stabilization is truly awesome, and better than sensor-based stabilization since you can see it working right through the viewfinder, making it easier to frame/focus your shot.

Although the lens may seem slow (f4-5.6), don't forget that stabilization gives you an extra 2-3 stops, so it's really more like f2-2.8 (without the reduced depth of field, of course). DO NOT consider the slightly cheaper non-VR version, unless the slightly smaller size is an absolute necessity.

The D40x dSLR camera with nikon nikkor lens is a poorer choice for the vast majority of people. The extra resolution means your photos take up more space and are slower to work with. It also has a slower max. flash sync speed (1/200 vs 1/500).

If you don't know what this means, trust me, it's important, and one day you'll be really happy you have it. Since the D40's pixels are larger (less pixels in the same size sensor), there is less noise, so having ISO 100 is useless.

Do you really need 10MP? Do you print larger than 16x20? Heck, do you print at all? I know I don't. Think it will give you more cropping ability? Think again. Without a super expensive lens, the lack of sharpness and magnified distortion of the cropped image won't be as good as the uncropped 6MP of the D40.

I have the original 18-55mm AF-S DX nikon lens which came with my D40 kit and love it - it weighs nothing, performs brilliantly, and focuses so close that I can use this 18 55 nikon lens as a macro if I want.
I decided to get this since I do quite a bit of indoor photography without flash, and wanted some extra stability in low-light, longer-shutter speed situations from the Vibration Reduction which I have on my 18-200mm VR but don't use on my D40.
It's performed brilliantly under such circumstances; I can get sharp shots at 1/20, 1/10 and even 1/8 if I'm really stable at the time of the shot - something I couldn't reliably get from the non-VR version.
It also helps in the long end (55mm) in uneven light and other times when the VR becomes necessary.
In terms of sharpness, light falloff, distortion, and all the other metrics, this 18 55 nikon lens is as good as, or slightly better, than the original non-VR version.
It is also a bit heavier and seems a bit more solid in construction, with a tighter zoom ring and differently-sculpted manual focus ring with more recessed plastic indentations compared with the original model.
If you generally do lots of flash or outdoor photography, and don't tend to experience slower shutter speeds due to lighting issues, or take most of your shots at the wider end of the scale this 18 55mm nikon lens is probably an upgrade that you can either do with or without.
In the end the investment is quite small for those few times that VR might save the shot, so I would get one.
Granted, VR at this level is less about hand shake in daylight, but more about low lighting conditions and longer shutter speeds.

If you are a serious photographer, you are going to be better off buying the body of this camera separately from the lens. It isn't that the 18-55mm lens, 3.5-5.6 aperture lens is bad: it just isn't great for inside work, as far as I can tell.
The kind of "meh" aperture range means you'll struggle a bit in "normal" indoor lighting to get hand-held shots that don't really want flash, and the problem with the flash is it is straight-ahead flash, so that your attempts at head shots are going to potentially have a deer-in-the-headlights quality about them.
This will be because even zoomed in to 55mm, you're going to need to be close to a subject for a portrait shot--closer than you really would like to be. Getting the two-lens kit, for a couple hundred dollars more, might be a really good alternative here, because I think the longer telephoto in that kit can go out to 200mm, giving you more flexibility in where you need to stand for shots.
I was pretty sure when purchasing the kit that I was going to quickly need a really solid prime to go with it, and the Sony 50mm f 1.4 has already proven itself a valuable addition.
The good news is that, aside from the "adequate-but-kind-of-meh" lens, everything else on this thing mostly rocks! I was a bit nervous because I had seen other reviews in which some reviewers chewed on the ergonomics a bit, but I'm not really finding that to be a problem so far.
The battery door, the door to the memory cards, etc., are rigid and open happily and confidently. As far as the battery goes, my advice would be to pick up an extra battery, because after charging mine the first time, I was down to roughly half power without having taken that many photos maybe 75 RAW out of what I was being told was a 500-image total available.
I didn't expect the battery to make it for 500 shots, but it looks like I would have gotten about 150 shots out of the charge, and I can definitely see situations where a photographer would run into trouble from that.

This is the third version of Canon EF Telephoto 18-55mm lens camera kit lens. The first two editions of the ef telephoto lens were regularly derided on the internet for poor sharpness at the corners, chromatic aberrations, and general naff build quality.
I can't confirm any of that, because I haven't used the older versions, although the samples I have seen were unimpressive. You can find these lenses going cheaply on eBay, because no-one wants them.
In contrast, the Canon EF Telephoto 18-55mm lens IS has exceeded expectations, and has received good reviews, notably from Digital Photography Review and Photozone.de. They go into a lot of detail about the image sharpness and so forth, I will not try to duplicate their work.
I've had mine for a week or so now, and I've tested it and used it generally out and about. I like it, with some reservations.
It's smaller and less conspicuous than my Sigma 18-125mm. It has far less distortion than my Canon 24-85mm.
It's more versatile than my old Super Takumar f1.4, although in most other respects the Takumar squashes it like a bug, not least because it is made of metal.
The Canon EF Telephoto 18-55mm lens big drawback is its physical design. It's has a nice rubber zoom ring, and it feels tougher than my Canon 50mm f1.8.
However, the front part of the Canon EF Telephoto 18-55mm lens, with the manual zoom ring, wobbles a bit.
As the reviews have pointed out, the front of the lens rotates as it focusses (and moves back and forth a surprising amount), which makes it a bother to use polarising filters.
It's a shame Canon didn't enlarge the body slightly, and completely enclose the front of the Canon EF Telephoto 18-55mm lens.

This Nikon nikkor lens is sharp even at wide apertures, the VR works great, autofocus speed is more than acceptable, and it it is very light and compact. The fact that it costs $250 and has effective VR is pretty amazing - no other company offers a lens with this 18 55mm lens nikkor feature for anywhere near this price.

As for image quality, search the various internet photo sites, such as preview and nikonians for sample photos taken with this Nikon nikkor lens by real users. The results are impressive! My copy produces similar results. The previous reviewer must have a bad sample.

Of course, the 18 55mm lens nikkor is slow, in that its widest aperture is smaller than a professional zoom or prime lens, so it's not a good choice for action photography in lower light conditions. But a fast EF telephoto lens will cost at least three times as much and weigh a ton.
I give the Nikon nikkor lens 5 stars based on a combination of image quality, value, and compactness/lightness.

I received mine as part of my kit package with my Nikon D40. It is a decent nikkor lens that cuts corners all over to keep price down, and doesn't really do anything great.

Save the D40/X which doesn't have an internal focus motor and as such no switch on the camera. However, more experienced users will find the manual focus ring quite distasteful.

Also, since the front element rotates, use with a polarize will be annoying.

I was shooting from my 12 years with my first SLR camera. Nikon is the camera is all manual tank I never thought that digital SLR to compete with my film camera but I will tell you that it certainly is not.

Yes, it does look a little "plastic," probably doesn't have the build quality for heavy, everyday use by a real working pro,

and does not look massive mounted on your camera body,

like a "fast" pro lens that's squeezing out that last F stop.

But IMO, it looks very similar to Nikon's newer lenses, so there is no scarlet letter immediately identifying you as "cheap." In other words, "Get over it."

So, why did Nikon Lense produce such a good lens at such a bargain price?

I'd say that it's because Nikon announced their intention to do the same a little while ago.

Low Chroma I read a test that found higher than normal amounts of CA in this 18 55mm nikon lens at some apertures, but I don't see it. My standard test is to shoot bare tree limbs on bright sunny days & look for purple fringing, especially at the edges.

I'm not seeing anywhere near the level of fringing shown in some of their test shots.If anything, I'd call it "low" I read elsewhere that one of Nikon lens goals in adding the aspherical element to this lens was to reduce CA, so I'm thinking maybe the lens tested in photozon.de was just a bad apple.
Image Shake control works. I can't attest to how often it provides a full 4 stops worth of shake reduction, but I can see a very clear result when using it.

Fast accurate focusing. One of the reasons I purchased this lens was because I was dissatisfied with the performance of my (more expensive) Sigma 17-35 EX (the newer model), which while sharp, is just too slow and inaccurate a focuser for close work in action sports. The new Nikon lens solved that problem.
Compact, light weight & unobtrusive. Not much bigger than a normal lens.

Not very fast. Another area where an "L" has an edge. At F3.5 28mm equivalent and F5.6 85mm this lens is relatively slow compared to a pro lens. This effects stopping the action in low light. OH, you will have to spend hundreds more to get a usable top speed of F 2.8 and that is only one stop faster at 28mm equiv. I think both this 18 55mm nikon lens sharpness and the IS system mitigate this.

It took me a while to learn that I could shoot wide open at all focal lengths without having the outer third of the image turn to mush.That's pretty amazing for a zoom at this price. You don't have a stop or two you almost never use because it is too soft. And the IS system works well in low light, though that doesn't figure in in stopping the action.

Nikon D3000 is Nikon beginner / entry level camera. It replaces Nikon D60. There are three major upgrade of D3000 from D60. There are 11 Auto focus system with dynamic tracking and 3D tracking. This AF system is the same as Nikon mid-range/enthusiast camera, D90. Also, the LCD screen has been enlarged to 3 inches from 2.5 inches. However, the screen resolution remains the same at 230,000 dots. Also new is the Guide mode, this new mode is working as your tutor on basic photography. It helps you set up your camera, in the same time, it tells you about basic photography setting and concepts. Other than that, everything looks the same, buttons, placement, viewfinder and image quality/resolution.

It is an average size for beginner DSLR camera. But if you are coming from compact camera, you might a bit surprise of the size. On the other hand, if you are coming from advanced DSLR camera, then you will feel this camera is compact and light.

Nikon D3000 has a thumb dial, which you will use most of the time to change shutter speed and aperture. There are mode dial on the top of the camera. Several basic buttons such as playback, delete, menu, magnifiy/zoom, and exposure compensation. There is also a function (Fn) button on the left side, near the flash that you can customize according to your need.

Coming from more advance Nikon camera like Nikon D90, what missing are the ISO button, Image Quality button, Release mode button, AF mode button and White Balance button. If you want to change above settings, you need to go to shooting menu (green camera icon). I recommend you to customize the Fn button so you can change you favorite button faster. I change my D3000 Fn button to ISO setting.

LCD Screen
D3000 has 3 inches LCD screen with 230k resolution. This is considered basic, but the screen is clear, sharp. If you like to check on the details or pixel levels, it is best to check the images on your computer. In the bright light condition, this screen is relatively good. There is minimal glare/reflection.

Nikon D3000 has 95% coverage and 0.8x magnification viewfinder. It is considered small for DSLR size, but for people who moves from superzooms or advanced compact, this viewfinder are big and a lot clearer. Manual focusing is more challenging than the other Nikon's more advanced DSLRs.

Like Nikon D5000, Nikon D3000 does not have top LCD screen like D90 or more advanced camera. Unlike many of competitors entry level DSLR cameras, Nikon D3000 does not have any live view feature.

Lens and Compatibility
Nikon D3000 comes with 18-55mm nikon lens. This 18-55mm nikon lens has a plastic mount, but the image quality and the light is recommendable. It never get super sharp like pro grade lens, but pro grade lens might costs more than ten times, so 18-55mm nikon lens is one of the best value lens out in the market.

The 18-55mm nikon lens has image stabilization feature which is called Vibration Reduction (VR). It works well and quietly up to 3 stops. If you hold the camera tight and still, you can shoot up to a quarter second without motion blur.

Unfortunately, D3000 does not have built in focus motor in the camera, therefore, it can't auto focus older lenses such as the venerable Nikon 50mm f/1.8 or the legendary Nikon 85mm f/1.4D. Lenses that compatible with this camera are lenses that has built in motor (usually has AF-S code on it) and for third party lenses, look for HSM (Sigma lens).

Image Quality and ISO
Nikon D3000 employs 10 megapixel image sensor. This sensor is a bit inferior than sensors in the D90 and D300. But still this is more adequate for large print.

Image quality is excellent up to ISO 800. At 1600, a lot of noises start to creep in especially in shadow area. At 3200 (or Hi setting), the image is unacceptable only for very small print of web.

If you turn on Noise Reduction or NR (unfortunately no low-medium-strong option), the camera with smooth out the noises, but the image become softer and lose some details. If you concern about the lost of details, I suggest you to shoot with NR off, and then take care the images with image editing software to treat the noise.

Excellent incremental improvement over an already-excellent lens
I have the original 18 55mm nikon lens AF-S DX which came with my D40 kit and love it - it weighs nothing, performs brilliantly, and focuses so close that I can use it as a macro if I want. I decided to get this since I do quite a bit of indoor photography without flash, and wanted some extra stability in low-light, longer-shutter speed situations from the Vibration Reduction which I have on my 18-200mm VR but don't use on my D40 (I use that on my D300, and it almost never comes off). It's performed brilliantly under such circumstances; I can get sharp shots at 1/20, 1/10 and even 1/8 if I'm really stable at the time of the shot - something I couldn't reliably get from the non-VR version. It also helps in the long end (55mm) in uneven light and other times when the VR becomes necessary. In terms of sharpness, light falloff, distortion, and all the other metrics, this lens is as good as, or slightly better, than the original non-VR version. It is also a bit heavier and seems a bit more solid in construction, with a tighter zoom ring and differently-sculpted manual focus ring (with more recessed plastic indentations compared with the original model). I think the addition of VR makes it the perfect lens for the D40, D40x or newly-introduced D60, since its performance is so much better in all metrics and tests (particularly distortion and sharpness) than some of its would-be step-up replacements (i.e. the 18-135, the 24-120, etc.)

If you generally do lots of flash or outdoor photography, and don't tend to experience slower shutter speeds due to lighting issues, or take most of your shots at the wider end of the scale (i.e. 18-25mm) this lens is probably an upgrade that you can either do with or without. In the end the investment is quite small for those few times that VR might save the shot, so I would get one. Granted, VR at this level (i.e not 200 or 300mm) is less about hand shake in daylight, but more about low lighting conditions and longer shutter speeds. As for some reviewer's comments on the default lens speed, etc. - this is a $200 prosumer lens, not a $1,500 17-55mm pro wide-zoom with f/2.8 costing 8 times what this lens costs; for the money, you can't get anything better for a Nikon with this kind of performance.

Additional notes: There is some clunking sound from the VR occasionally when focusing, and there is no hood or lens pouch included, but that's less of an issue if, as most people do, you have a camera or lens bag, and as for the hood, I've never used one and never had a problem; if there's sunglare, I can cup my hand around the lens (since it's so light) and have no issues. I think some people use lens hoods to somehow show off that they're "photographers" or "hobbyist-pros" rather than for the reduction of flare and glare when outside in bright sunlight (sometimes direct, etc.) or under sharp lighting. Honestly, I've seen guys taking indoor shots of artwork exhibits under soft lighting with the hood on.

18 55mm nikon lens PERFORMANCE

General

It's cheap and works great. It's sharp, doesn't have much distortion, zooms easily to any exact setting focuses silently, closely and reasonably fast. Nikon never ceases to amaze me with cheaper and cheaper lenses made with more and more plastic that outperform older designs that look tougher and cost more. Nikon's been making Nikkor lenses since 1932 so they know a trick or two.

It's half the weight of the 18 - 70 mm kitted with the D70, about the same size and half the price. Nikon consistently offers better and better optics at lower and lower prices.

The bayonet mount is plastic. This is OK since people change lenses on digital cameras as little as possible to keep out dirt. Complain if you want, just remember that the USA version is covered under a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty. Mercedes and BMW only offer a 4 year warranty which has a mileage limit. If you wear out the 18 55mm nikon lens after 5 years you can just throw it away (or dump it on eBay), buy another and you've still only paid as much as you would have for the 18 - 70. I'm picky on my $1,500 lenses and quite happy with this on a $150 lens.

Focus

It focuses reasonably fast and silently. I haven't compared it directly to the other 18-70 and 17-55 lenses but it seems about as fast.

It's only half an AF-S lens. Real $1,000 AF-S lenses like the 17 - 55 AF-S have big AF-S motors wrapped around the optics and drive the focus directly. Real AF-S lenses allow instant manual focus override. This cheepie has a dinky motor driving the lens through a shaft and gears exactly as if Nikon just used the AF motor already built into the camera. It would be a better lens if Nikon skipped the AF-S motor and used those costs better elsewhere. About the only thing AF-S does is let Nikon pimp the lens with gold "AF-S" letters so camera stores can try to pitch it as a "pro" feature against the similar Canon, Sigma or Quantaray lenses. On this 18 - 55 all AF-S means is that it focuses very quietly.

It has no A/M position; only a fixed A or a fixed M and the focus ring is just a thin band at the very front of the lens not seemingly intended for manual use.

Leave your camera set to AF and select manual focusing on the lens if you need MF.

There is no focus distance scale, and therefore no IR scale or depth of field scale either. The manual focus is via a skimpy plastic ring.

The front rotates with focus, making things a bit of a pain with grad ND and polarizing filters.

Distortion (at infinity)

The distortion is pretty good! it has some barrel distortion at 18 55mm nikon lens which goes away at 55mm. If you have PhotoShop CS2 it's trivial to correct completely.

It has less barrel distortion than the 18 - 70 mm lens at the 18 55mm nikon lens setting. Even the $1,500 17 - 55 mm lens has almost the same distortion at 17mm. At 55 mm this cheap 18 - 55 has no distortion while the ten-times as expensive 17 - 55 has visible pincushion distortion!

18 mm: Barrel. CS2's lens distortion correction fixes it perfectly at a setting of +4.50. If you don't have PhotoShop CS2 and look for distortion you will see it at 18 mm. For about the price of CS2 you can get the 12 - 24 mm which has no distortion at 18 mm.

24 mm: very little barrel. CS2's lens distortion correction fixes it perfectly at a setting of +1.50.

35 mm: Negligible barrel. CS2's lens distortion correction fixes it at a setting of +1.00. This is the same distortion as the Zeiss ZF 50mm f/1.4.

45 mm: none. Maybe set CS2's lens distortion correction to 0.1, except that that tool can't be set that close to zero.

55 mm: none. Zero.

At 50mm this cheap 18 55mm nikon lens zoom has no distortion, compared to the Zeiss ZF 50mm f/1.4 which has at least ten times as much barrel distortion at 50mm.

Sharpness

I'm impressed: it's sharp at all apertures and focal lengths all over the frame. I can't find any real fault with this lens. Of course at small apertures you'll get diffraction which is a matter of the laws of physics. Sharpest apertures, presuming you have enough depth-of-field, are around f/5.6 - f/8.

It's as sharp as any other lens I have on a 6MP camera. It also is quite free from lateral chromatic aberration, called "purple fringing" by amateurs. Points of light or b/w lines at the corners stay crisp. If you have a really bright light to the sides there is a tiny bit of magenta spill, but less than my other lenses.

Camera magazines love to rain on the parades of cheap lenses that work great by pointing out that the cheap construction may not hold up over time. This could lead to looseness in the zoom assembly which might degrade sharpness. So what? Even if it does it's cheap enough to throw away after Nikon USA's 5 year warranty runs out. Guess what? I also used a $1,500 pro zoom once that also was worn out. I'd have no concerns owning this lens.

Zooming

It's zoom ring is nice and linear with no bunching up at either end. This is a huge improvement over the 18 - 70 mm and 24 - 85 lenses which bunch together the wide settings making it hard to adjust precisely among the wide settings, and making you have to move the zoom ring a lot for even small changed at the tele end. The zooming on this 18 - 55 by comparison is perfect: each movement of the zoom ring gives about the same percentage change of focal length. This alone would make me prefer it to the more expensive 18 - 70 for general use.

This lens is no longer in production. Get today's 18-55mm II if you're buying new. Today's 18-55mm II appears to be the same lens with different cosmetics. The rest of this was written several years ago for this original, discontinued lens.

This is the first lens I'd get if I wanted a mid length zoom for under $700. I prefer it to the more expensive 18 - 70 AFS. For $700 I got the $700 18 - 200 instead, which adds more zoom range and VR but has more distortion.

This 18 55mm nikon lens is an excellent compact lens for any Nikon digital SLR. It's a far more handy focal length range than any film-era zoom starting at 24mm. This 18 - 55 mm offers the equivalent of a perfect 28 - 85 mm range and closer focusing without having to resort to the cumbersome macro ranges of film-era zooms.

I rarely use a midrange lens anyway. I only use it for parties and social functions where I want one lens for both group and head shots.

For my landscapes and art I prefer ultrawide, so 99% of the time I use my $1,000 12 - 24 mm, and the other 1% I use my 80 - 400 VR supertele. I rarely use a midrange zoom.

I prefer the pair of this 18 55mm nikon lens and 55 - 200 zooms to a huge range zoom like the Tamron 18 - 200 mm. The pair sells for the same price as that one Tamron, and gives much better performance at least in terms of distortion than the do-it-all lens.

If you have $700 then get the 18 - 200 mm VR instead. If not, get this 18 55mm nikon lens and the $150 70 - 300G. You'll save half and never miss the 55 - 70 segment.
